Stowaway from Vacation

Our wonderful July vacation may be over, but the fun continues. We brought a stowaway with us! Sister Bookworm came back with us to experience all of Southern California. One year ago, when Little C was born we made plans for Sister Bookworm to return and we would attend a living art show together.

The picture above is of us in front of the outdoor stage. Sister Bookworm had a great time! We both loved watching people replicate famous art. The actors never move, it's really crazy! I've never been to Buckingham Palace, but I would suspect that it is similar to the guards never flinching. (Or so I've heard!)

Some silly errors were also a series of pictures actually being 10 second videos because I had the camera on the wrong setting! Well, at least we got one great picture.

Day of Travel: Part II

After dinner, putting Little C to bed, and catching up on emails and facebook I'm back! I brought a stow away with me Bookworm Sister is hanging down south for awhile!

Didn't I promise a sunset picture. Pay no attention to the car, we were driving I did my best!

Oh my! I almost forgot to let you all know! I featured a guest post over at Fairly Fabulous today before all the traveling began! You should check it out and say hi to Meagan she's pretty awesome.

After a day of travel, I always wish for one superpower: Teleportation. Wouldn't that be the best no cars, planes, airports. You could just be there.

What about you? Any secret superpower you would wish for?

Day of Travel

Nine days ago we packed our things and set out for North Idaho. It has been an amazing vacation. I tried to keep you all up on everything going on, but believe me I have so much more to tell and show you.

This morning I watched the sun rise over the eatsern horizon of horse pasture and a gentle, inviting creek. Tonight, I'll be watching the sunset over the Pacific Ocean back home in southern California. That is a day of travel. You can wake up in one place and fall asleep in a completely different world. Did I mention the sun rises at 4:45 am this close to Canada? Crazy!

I'll be back tonight to finish my day of travel. Promise!

Barn Inspired Birthday

Above is the cake and cupcakes for Little C's second first birthday party! Remember when I mentioned he was spoiled and got two parties? Here is a small recap of the second birthday.

The barn was made from red velvet cake by my mom and sisters. Each cupcake featured a different flavor.
Chick: yellow
Lamb: white
Pig: strawberry
Cow: marble

Outdoorsy Sister got the idea from her Home & Garden's subscription. Re-creating edible art for all of us to enjoy!

The best part is the party took place on Nana & Pappy's ranch full of all the animals from horses, chicks, to lambs.

Recipe Thursday: Pound Cake

3 Things I did not realize when I set out to make pound cake:
1. So simple to make
2.  It's namesake is the fact that it used a POUND of BUTTER!!
3. Okay, in reality it's only 1/2 pound of butter, but pretty much just butter and sugar

I first made this pound cake for our Memorial Day BBQ after I ran my first 5k! Outdoorsy Sister and I are getting ready for another this Sunday. It will be my second and her fourth! We're running fools now. Thanks c25k and Nurse SC

I went with Paula Deen's pound cake recipe because I love her! Have you seen her show? Um, yeah I would love to cook fabulous meals and present them in my amazing backyard!
I also had a flat of strawberries after our Tanaka Farms tour and at the time Little C was not allowed to eat any. Just got the clearance at his one year check-up!

1/2 pound (2 sticks) butter, plus more for pan
1/2 cup vegetable shortening
3 cups sugar
5 eggs
3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for pan
1/2 teaspoon fine salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
With a mixer, cream butter and shortening together. ( I got to use my mixer again, yeah!)
Add sugar, a little at a time. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating after each addition.
Stir dry ingredients together in a bowl and add to mixer alternately with milk, starting with the flour and ending with the flour.
Mix in vanilla. Pour into a greased and floured tube pan and bake for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean.
recipe found here

It turned out great. Everyone loved it and I even whipped up some fresh homemade whipped cream as a topping along with the sugar coated strawberries. Delish!

Little Red Wagon Birthday Party

Little C’s Red Wagon Party was an absolute blast! It was so much fun to watch Little C have fun and enjoy his first birthday.

Wagon Axles (Fruit Kabobs)
Wagon Wheels (Toddler by Gerber)

The Games
Ball Pit- huge hit with all the kids!
Bocce Ball- huge hit with all the adults!
Baby Races- huge hit for everyone!

And of course, what kind of Red Wagon party would it be without wagon rides?

The Favors
the kids had sand buckets filled with sunglasses,  bubbles, crayons, and a red wagon coloring page.
Also, a picture collage of Little C in each month decorated the area and for everyone to have.

One Birthday, Two Parties

Little C is slightly spoiled...

If you haven' t heard we had two parties in honor of his first birthday! Complete posts on each party coming soon. For now I am sharing the fun stuff in between BBQ and fireworks!

Time for cake...

The first time he was a little apprehensive about the tower of cake. He quickly overcame that.

Today, he was not shy at all! Time for more cake...
Little C dived into in #1 cake without hesitation! By now he had already lost his shirt after some birthday water play!

Happy Birthday Colin!
We love our little 4th of July baby!!

Labor story

One year ago today...I was in labor. It started around 3 in the afternoon at the pool. Four days past my June 29th due date. My family was getting anxious and would eventually have to get back to their jobs as they were visiting. I joked that i felt i had a contraction. I wasn't sure if i had. I had no idea what one felt like! After the pool we went to In N Out for lunch with a hike planned after. Yes, you read that right i was planning on hiking or brisk walking anyway. That never happened because by now i realized these were for sure contractions. A call to the doctor confirmed and I was told to come in. A couple hours later and midnight came and went. I knew then i would be having a fourth of July baby. Our little firecracker was born at 1:28 in the morning. Everyone came and visited on their way to barbeques- even our doctor! It was an amazing day. More to come tomorrow!

Day at the Park

Little C is an explorer and loves a new expedition.
A stroll over to the park is the perfect getaway.

I love this particular park because there is ample room to roam. There are two baseball fields, but no baseball in the morning when we visit.

Little C loves to run from mama and stop and examine the grass. I love life through his eyes. Everything is new and amazing. Life is one big wonder for his little fingers. Crawling around on the grass feeling threads brush against his legs in a scratchy, but soft way that sort of tickles.

I love how he thinks he can crawl far out of my reach.
He's much faster at crawling these days while his steps are slow and excited.
I love how he giggles when he sees other kids to play with.

Do you remember a new and exciting time in your life or your little's new world?

Farewell June, Hello July!

Have I mentioned I love summer? The longer days, sunny skies, warm temps. And, oh yeah visiting family! After a visit from Sister Glamorous in March followed my a visit from my parents, Outdoorsy Sister came to visit at the end of May and we ran a 5K together. Now it's the Hunnels turn to visit all of them! We also have another 5k on the calendar during our visit.

July also brings Little C's first birthday and it's approaching quickly! We celebrated a little early with family and friends here before our plane ride 1,393 miles away to see family. I'll be writing a post soon about Little C's two birthday parties and all the party planning and prep. For now just a teaser of the party Techie Husband and I hosted for family and friends at a local park.

I'll be blogging every day on my vacay (after my minor blogger block/break) and you can expect lots of beautiful pictures and more hiking posts. I cannot even explain how excited I am! Even though we have visited over the past few months, we have not been back in the summer since 2009. Last year around this time my family was all here expecting the arrival of Little C!

See you tomorrow with a Saturday Snapshot (probably a party pic!). Also, I'll be talking about a local park with some pictures!
